We started in Piozzo and now we are almost in all parts of Italy One of the many effects of the craft beer revolution has been the spreading of an acronym that is now know by all: IPA. Behind this short name hides one of the most influential styles of the last decades.
Its almost legendary birth is part of the traditional British brewing culture, but we owe its recent rediscovery to American craft breweries. What does IPA mean, exactly? And why are beers under this category considered so important? The three letters stand for India Pale Ale , which is the full name of the style.
Each word needs an explanation. Ale is a synonym for top fermented beer , a type of beer that traditional British breweries have always been experts in. East Coast IPAs have strong hops, but also a strong, slightly sweet malt character that balances the beer out. New England IPAs are defined by huge fruity hop flavors.
Now seeing a fruit IPA is nothing shocking. An IPA is a hopped up, stronger pale ale. As IPAs have become stronger and hoppier, so have pale ales. It is only recently that we are so accustomed to them in pubs and bars across the UK. As a result of the craft ale movement, we are now lucky to see vibrancy, experimentation and diversity in IPAs. This is style of beer in the pale ale category, known for its hoppy flavour and aromas.
Alcohol content: IPAs generally vary from 5. Brewers from all over the world love the experimental brewing art. Today, there is a very large IPA lineage with a variety of variants and regional differences.
The types of hops that are used determine the aromas: IPA may taste like citrus or tropical fruits, be grassy, flowery or earthy, but also reminiscent of pines or even honey. In addition, the hops always ensure a certain bitterness. Because an IPA is usually refreshing, it is more commonly regarded as a summer beer. Drink an IPA as fresh as you can. Therefore, the younger the beer is, the more intense the flavour is. The flavours unfold best in a tulip-shaped glass at about 6 to 10 degrees.

IPA beer is also well liked thanks to the fact that it can be paired with different dishes in order to enhance the overall taste of both the food in question and the beer. For example, if you can handle a bit of heat, IPAs will form a pretty wild combination with spicy dishes.
An IPA is an intense beer, so intense dishes are a well-matched addition. You can get lost in there, with the bonus of fruity hop flavors. With a low carbonation, these usually end up drinking like a fruity milkshake, super smooth like a milk stout but much lighter in flavor and color.
The driving flavor in a Belgian IPA comes Belgian yeast, which provides sweet, bready, warm notes to the beer. These get better and better the closer you get to a fireplace. Pouring IPAs in a glass, instead of drinking them from a can, release all those lovely hop aromas. Adding fruit to beer is a risky procedure, but IPAs handle it pretty well. In a perfect world, a sour IPA would be equal parts tart, juicy, and fruity, but the sour IPA is still largely uncharted territory.
So hot right now, Brettanomyces. This yeast strain also seen in winemaking , added in the primary fermentation of the beer, gives a funky, melon-y quality to beer.
