Galio is one of the staple Mid Lane picks in the game right now, as his ability to apply side lane pressure and the ability to have a tank in the Mid Lane are two important key features almost no other champions have.
With Galio being near permaban status, teams might be looking for an effective replacement, and Sion might be a team's answer. Basically, instead of drawing Jungle pressure Mid Lane, the enemy Jungler will most likely be looking to camp Top Lane, or find your squishy Jungler and punish them for it. Either way, your team is going to be suffering somewhere else, unless your Top Laner is extremely good at playing aggressive, squishy carries. Another problem is that Sion, if he falls behind, is completely useless.
Sion has next to zero wave clear, which means if the enemy team starts to group up and push, Sion is going to have a hard time doing anything at all. And, unless you have a Sivir ADC, your team is going to get permanently pushed in, which will lead to losing dragons, barons, and the game.
A final way why Sion mid is not the greatest is because of Patch 8. Firstly, his E was bugfixed, which fixed the hitbox on his E ability. As well, Warmog's Armor got nerfed, albeit only slightly, but is still something to take note of. I know, a not direct answer. It's just that you need to synergize with the kit to compensate for the unreliability.
For example, because Sion's Unstoppable Onslaught is difficult to land what does it do inevitably? Get you in close proximity to the team-fight.
By extending the purpose of the ultimates ability to get you close to a teamfight despite not always landing the damage, you can easily get a Randuin's Omen onto the enemy team.
What are the two reactions people have to your Decimating Smash? They either juke it or attempt to throw hard cc to stop it. How can you use this to your advantage? Simple, if enemies can "easily" juke the spell then lead it into a trap. For example, start your decimating smash where a large portion is away from the minion wave. The enemies juke the smash into the minion wave.
You can then cancel the channel and use your Roar of the Slayer to get them. If people are "so afraid" of your smash that they are willing to go out of their way to try and stop it. In essence, Sion's kit is hard to pull off it's maximum potential but their are definitely ways to work around it and even utilize the weaknesses as an advantage. I'd say Sion is pretty balanced now. As terrifying as his kit can get, it is definitely simple to work around it's power due to it's unreliability.
Sion really tones down any extremes you go on him. The only problem I see with Sion is his abilities scaling on two different damage types. This limits his potentail damage output.
His abilities are designed to have a counter used against them. This is ideal for balancing a champion that has the ability to stun chain you by himself. Unreliable can become reliable though with enough practice and a good item build that takes into consideration of what's needed at the moment and later. Building items that sustain him and let him tank as he set ups his abilities works well at eliminating weakness but doesn't let him excel greatly without a team backing him up.
The recomended items are based on eliminating his weaknesses and not based on increasing his potentail damage output into a carry. It can be used to initiate fights or in the middle of a fight for extra CC. This is the escape he needs while split pushing or getting ganked. The largest weakness Sion has is telegraphing abilities. This is particularly a problem with his two best CC abilities, his ultimate and his Q. Both of these abilities telegraph almost exactly where they are going to be landed usually allowing a solid second before they will go down.
In professional games, late game team fights become an issue when anyone you would want to be locking down with CC will usually have a movement skill, a support who can boost their run speed, a tank to walk in front of his ultimate, an interrupt for his Q, or at the very least flash. The setup that is required, Sion does not bring to the table. Compared to Maokai or Lissandra who both have targeted abilities to open on the hard to lock down champions.
Even his W and passive are telegraphed hard, his W is harder to deal with due to the range of the explosion but the time is there to counter it if needed. Leaving only his E where the opponent really has to predict it to dodge it. His E is crippled by a long cooldown, while 8 seconds on his E does not seem very long it pales in comparison to some similar champion abilities such as Dr.
Overall his abilities make his threat level to be almost insignificant. This is really the last straw that makes him useless in late game. In addition, if it is held for at least one second, enemies hit by the ability will be knocked up between 1. Since the mana cost for this ability is extremely low and has a decent range, Sion is able to constantly zone enemy champion from cs with ease.
Sion shields himself that scales based on maximum health and AP. This shield lasts for six seconds, however, after half of its duration has passed, Sion can activate the ability again to detonate the shield, dealing damage to nearby enemies damage also scales on max HP and AP.
Sion deals damage in a medium ranged line towards the targeted direction. The first enemy minion or non-epic monster hit will be shot towards the cursor, extending the range of the damage area. Sion becomes unstoppable and gains increasing movement speed towards a target direction. However, enemy champion hit will be dealt scaling damage based on the distance of the charge, knocked up for 0.
There are multiple ways to start a fight with Sion. Farm it up: While it is possible to abuse a handful of champions in the early game, Sion is very vulnerable to ganks prior to level six and is innately a scaling champion. Try to farm safely, preferably on your side of the lane.
The more farm you get, the more health you gain through your W passive making him an absolutely monster in the late game. Darius: While Sion is strongest against melee champion, he often gets countered by Darrius. This is because Darius tends to build similar items as Sion, making him fairly tanky and un-killable since Sion only has some burst. On the other hand, Darius has constant damage and fairly good sustain through his Q. To counter Sion as Darius, rush a ninja tabi and black cleaver.
