In my opinion it starts in how the slave history is told in school. As a white kid in a mostly black school when that was taught it lost me friends I had before, but it made them look at me differently. Maybe it would of went different if they would of told the whole story. I've always had that burden of "why my people had slaves" until one day I sought out the truth. What I found was that blacks weren't the only people who were enslaved.
My ancestors were slaves as well. They originally were taken by Muslims enslavers from Europe and when they were free they fled to Ireland where peoples were enslaved there too.
